Special Texas Homes – where everyone makes a difference!

Special Texas Homes gives people with intellectual and developmental disabilities a warm and friendly place to live and grow. The thirteen homes, all located in neighborhoods throughout southeast Harris County, provide a family atmosphere that encourages individual choice and opportunities to live life to the fullest. Each home is licenses by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) as an Intermediate Care Facility for people with Mental Retardation or Related Conditions (ICF-MR/RC).

Each home has caring and well trained staff on duty twenty four hours a day to assist people in their daily therapeutic training and activities, and to provide an environment of warmth and acceptance. The staff in the home are supported by experienced and professional consultants and staff in the areas of Nursing, Pharmacy, Psychology, Psychiatry, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Speech Therapy. Each person’s training and activities are directed by a Qualified Mental Retardation Professional.

In addition to the thirteen homes, Special Texas Homes offers the S.T.A.R. Center, a day habilitation center located in southeast Houston. The S.T.A.R. Center offers prevocational, vocational and life skills training and activities to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who live in the community as well as to the people who live in the homes operated by Special Texas Homes. At the S.T.A.R. Center we stress Skills, Teamwork, Achievement and Recreation for people of all ages.
